New Haven Release Routes
New Haven Correctional Center is a CT DOC correctional center, not a county jail. CT DOC says it serves Superior Courts in Bantam and Litchfield as well as Meriden, New Haven, and Waterbury. It primarily holds pretrial men at a high security level. That makes it the facility many people with a Litchfield County case may pass through while waiting for bond, court action, or case resolution.
A release from New Haven can mean return to the community on bond or a court order. It can also mean time served, the end of a short sentence, parole or special parole, or a transfer to another DOC facility. If a detainer exists, the person may move to another state, federal, or immigration authority. A movement out of New Haven is not proof of community release. Read the destination and legal basis before drawing that conclusion.

Confirm New Haven Releases
The CT DOC inmate information search is the first official lookup. Gather the full legal name, date of birth, DOC number, approximate admission date, and Litchfield or Bantam docket before searching. A DOC number is the strongest search key. When only a name is known, compare birth date, latest admission, controlling offense, status, and facility.
- Run the CT DOC search and save the exact status, current location, and date labels.
- Check Connecticut VINE for a participating custody change tied to the same identity.
- Open the Litchfield Judicial District or GA 18 docket to find bond, dismissal, sentence, or remand details.
- Use DOC Public Information for a nonexempt movement or release record if the public search no longer settles the question.
- Check parole, probation, BOP, or ICE only when the case record or detainer points to that system.
CT DOC's public search is populated through its Offender Based Information System on a nightly basis. CT.gov also warns that release dates can change and a status may not yet be processed. VINE is useful for notice of a custody change, but it does not explain the court order. The docket and DOC movement record complete the trail.
Note: Save the exact status wording because transfer, release, and discharge do not describe the same event.
New Haven Release Record Fields
CT DOC documents a broad set of public inmate fields. They include inmate number, name, birth date, admission, status, location, bond, controlling offense, sentencing dates, sentence length, estimated and maximum release dates, special parole date, detainer, and photograph. Some fields apply only to accused people or sentenced people. Others may be restricted or unavailable after discharge.

A person who left before DOC admission may never have the New Haven record a family expects. Court release can happen after arraignment or a bond event. In that case, the Judicial Branch docket and arresting-agency record are more direct than a DOC search.

Ask for nonexempt admission and release dates, facility movement, release type when maintained and public, sentence-date fields, detainer status, and a DOC photograph if releasable. Include the DOC number and docket when known. Copy or special-production fees may apply under Connecticut law; ask for an estimate.
New Haven Litchfield Court Releases
The connection to Litchfield County comes through the courts this facility serves. The Litchfield Judicial District courthouse is at 50 Field Street in Torrington. Geographical Area No. 18 is at 80 Doyle Road in Bantam. Search both the court and docket details when the only starting point is “Litchfield County.”
A docket can show bond, a promise to appear, a nolle, dismissal, time served, probation, or a sentence that placed the person in DOC. It also helps identify whether someone left the courthouse before being admitted to New Haven. The Connecticut Division of Criminal Justice does not provide public criminal records and directs the public to the Judicial Branch, State Police, and DOC instead.

New Haven Correctional Center Profile
CT DOC describes New Haven Correctional Center as a Level 4 high-security correctional center housing primarily pretrial offenders. It opened on April 27, 1976. A dormitory addition followed in 1991, a parking garage in 1993, and an outside detail unit in 1997. These facts identify the modern state facility and help separate it from obsolete references to a Litchfield County jail.

The state page confirms that Bantam and Litchfield are among the courts served. That is why the facility belongs in a Litchfield County release search despite its New Haven address.

Property After New Haven Release
CT DOC Offender Re-Entry Services supplies a concrete rule for identification left behind. Identification held at a facility remains there until discharge. If the person does not claim it, the discharging facility retains it for 30 days. It is then sent to DOC Central Office in Wethersfield and stored for up to two years after discharge.
Contact New Haven first during the initial period, then use Central Office routing. That rule covers identification held by DOC. It does not prove where every piece of personal property went, and it is not a release-status check. Confirm other property with the facility.
New Haven Release Status Checks
A current New Haven location in the CT DOC search means the person has not been confirmed as released from DOC. An estimated release date is still a projection. A blank or missing public result is also inconclusive because the record may have changed, moved, become restricted, or not yet reached the nightly public feed. The strongest check pairs the current search with VINE and the court docket, then asks Public Information for the official movement when those sources disagree.

A released person can remain under legal control outside a prison wall. Parole and special parole belong to CT DOC and the Board of Pardons and Paroles. Probation belongs to the Judicial Branch. Federal supervised release is separate again. “Not at New Haven” and “free of all supervision” are therefore very different findings.

Old Litchfield Jail Records
The former Litchfield County Jail is closed. It may appear in older articles, maps, or historical search results, but it does not hold current detainees and publishes no modern release roster. Connecticut unified county jails and state prisons under CT DOC in 1968. Modern custody therefore follows a statewide record.
For a current case, start with New Haven, York, another CT DOC location, or the Torrington and Bantam courts. Historical jail references should never replace an official current-custody check.
